Queenslander in top draw of world’s best illustrators!

When it comes to making his mark on the page of international illustration, Queensland illustrator Ron Monnier never draws a blank.

Ron Monnier was the only Queenslander to win a spot in the prestigious illustrators ‘bible’, Lürzer’s Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide – an international publication for art buyers.

Within the ‘best of the best’, only the top 5 per cent of illustrators were chosen to have three illustrations featured.

Ron Monnier was given two full pages and a quarter page for three of his illustrations – a rare feat.

“I was really thrilled to hear that I had been invited to take part – it was a pretty tough competition going up against some of the most respected names in illustration – many international illustrators that I’ve admired for years,” Ron Monnier said.

“To have my work selected from more than 4,000 entries – and be recognised by the best of the best in the industry was really a wonderful feeling.

Only 12 Australians were chosen for the top 200.

More than 30,000 copies of Lurzer’s Archive will make their way around the globe to publishing, media and advertising outlets; promoting the eclectic talents of those featured.

Ron Monnier is no stranger to the publishing world. As a freelance illustrator he has created and designed fresh and unique illustrations for TIME Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Bulletin, Readers Digest and many more publications.

He has also illustrated children’s’ books for Hardie Grant (Zac Power Test Drive chapter books) and Pan Macmillan (The Space Brigade series of books).

Ron Monnier’s style is an eclectic mix of collage, drawing and digital illustration. He often draws on iconic images in popular culture and juxtaposes them into a unique situation. Every illustration has an idea, which intends to create intrigue for the reader.

He has also had a number of exhibitions in Brisbane and most recently featured in a show in New York.

It’s all in the mix!

To me, every job has a unique recipe. Clients always want something tantalising that leaves you wanting more. When I’m creating, I go shopping in my head for fresh ideas and ingredients to make a delicious illustration – and then I get mixing. When the consistency is just right, I turn up the heat (sometimes burning the candle at both ends) and watch the results.

I love to collect bits and pieces of ephemera and my technique is to use an unusual mix of textures, collage and hand-drawn and painted images.

I have been illustrating for many years for national and international magazines, publishers and advertising agencies.

I love illustrations that have an original concept and tell a story that is unforgettable. My work includes illustrations for advertising, promotions, books, magazines and web, portraits and caricatures (editorial/political), childrens literature, fine art, toys and games.

Artistic styles: mixed media (watercolour, acrylic, pencil, collage and digital).

I am the most happiest when I can smell the paint, feel the paper and fly like a bird!
